Doug Frates’ American Art Glass is hot, hot, hot! (Literally!)
Inspired by nature’s organic forms, artisan Doug Frates transforms hot molten glass into striking sculptures and decorative art that is as ethereal as it is surreal.
We chatted with Cantoni’s Art and Accessory Buyer, Crystal Torcoletti to get the scoop on how Cantoni came to work with the skilled sculptor of glass:
“I’m always on the hunt to bring new talent into our stores and from the moment I discovered Doug Frates’ “Wall Mounted Finger Bowls” at High Point Market, I knew we’d have to find a way to collaborate. Frates’ intricately crafted glass-blown wall fixtures became an instant hit at our stores and we’ve since proudly commissioned pieces for Cantoni clients across the country in addition to introducing his collection of one-of-a-kind glass vessels from wow-worthy centerpieces and bowls to vibrant vases and sweeping installations.”

Fun fact: A St. Louis native, Frates served as a Marine and completed a tour in Iraq, before pursuing his passion for the fiery radiance of hand-blown glass. Settling in Tucson, Arizona, Frates honed his skills and developed a signature technique to seamlessly fuse swirling colors into one organic form which can be seen throughout his works.
