Before + After: A Traditional Kitchen Gets a Modern Makeover

Cantoni designer, George Saba takes a traditional kitchen from outdated and drab to fresh and fab!

Maria and Gabriel Higuera enlisted Cantoni Houston designer George Saba to transform their home’s outdated traditional kitchen into an airy and modernized space where they could cook and enjoy meals with their two young daughters. Having recently redecorated their home’s interiors, the Higueras wanted the kitchen to reflect the same modern aesthetic carried throughout the house. George and Cantoni’s Kitchen Director, Scott Bonds worked closely with the couple to identify the best layout to maximize the space and accommodate their family’s needs.

To achieve the streamlined look they wanted, George took a minimalistic approach and selected a monochromatic color palette and seamless custom cabinetry with hidden groove channels. Incorporating playful pops of color, George added open shelving units, finished in bright blue matte lacquer. Other functional features, like an induction cooktop, recessed under-cabinet lighting and innovative shelving systems were built into the design to ensure it would be practical for everyday use as well as provide ample display and storage space for the family’s cooking essentials.

To complete the space, panel-ready appliances from Miele, including the refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher were integrated into the high gloss lacquer panels to maintain the clean lines of the space. To further enhance the overall look, the Higueras opted for a sculptural, ultra-modern dining table and cantilevered dining chairs from Cattelan Italia for the breakfast room.
