Inside a Stylish California Townhome

A high-profile client calls upon Cantoni design consultant Bernadette Capellaro to create a cool live-work space hot on style in one of LA’s trendiest neighborhoods

A mere block and a half from Venice Beach and close to Abbot Kinney, one of the coolest Boho-chic streets in the nation, is a row of three-story live-work contemporary townhomes. The location couldn’t be more ideal within walking distance of most everything Venice has to offer.

The homeowner recently purchased the space to serve as his West Coast respite. He longed for a modern, hip retreat that also catered to his work commitments. So, he turned to Cantoni design consultant Bernadette Capellaro to make it happen.

Bernadette played off of the industrial architecture’s polished concrete floors and asymmetrical windows, and used a neutral color palette with thoughtful pops of color, sourcing furnishings, accessories and artwork from Cantoni.

The first-floor office is a vibrant, graphic “workshop” complete with an American Leather sleeper sofa for guests, a mustard-gray Vintage area rug and a Cattelan Italia Pat coffee table for client meetings. Additional punch comes in the form of East End London graffiti artwork and Sklo hand-blown, Czech-designed wall discs. “It’s a fun, artsy office that is also functional with the sleeper sofa and table as a workspace,” Bernadette says. “It’s bold and practical.”

She designed the second-floor living area to be “monochromatic, soothing and calming — a great place to kick back,” she says. “A place to melt and relax after a long day.” She pulled in the Valentino sectional in cotton twill, the structural Elica cocktail table and the symmetrical Zeppelin ceiling lamp imported from Italy.

In the master bedroom, she devised a serene black-white-gray mix with the Mayfair leather bed and added whimsical touches with a Chain Bust sculpture and a wire vase complete with an oversized ‘make-a-wish’ dandelion.

The peaceful palette and clean-lined furnishings resulted in a cohesive, calming and well-designed retreat that sports a breezy, edgy vibe — with a sophisticated twist. In other words: it’s all very California.
