A Luxuriously Calming Escape

When Mark Walters and his husband Ronnie built their new home in Charlotte, they tapped Cantoni designer Pam Satterly to collaborate from the studs up and create the contemporary retreat of their dreams.

It all started with a serpentine sectional. Mark Walters and his husband Ronnie Brown had searched far and wide for modern furnishings and a designer they could work well with—looking for professionals as far-flung as Canada—with little luck. That all changed when the Charlotte, North Carolina residents, who were building a new home, paid a visit to Cantoni’s store in Atlanta, where they met design consultant Pam Satterly.

“From beginning to end, when we walked into the store, Pam was easy to talk to and easy to relate to—and everything started from there,” Mark says. When Pam saw the living room blueprint and immediately suggested a custom curving sectional, Mark and Ronnie knew she was the designer they’d hoped to find. In addition to selecting the furnishings, lighting and rugs, Pam worked with the couple from the onset to advise on interior finishes such as tile, flooring and paint colors, for their soon-to-be built modern retreat.

The goal was a strong, contemporary “less is more,” atmosphere. “We started with grays,” Pam says. “We knew we wanted to keep a cool, subtle color palette with pops of red.” After building began—and with only the home’s studs to work from—Pam helped Mark and Ronnie select the tiles that now adorn almost every room in the home, from the living room wall and fireplace to all the master bathroom surfaces.

They then moved on to furnishings and lighting, filling nearly the entire home and outdoor spaces with Cantoni. In the dining area, the sleek polished stainless steel of the Arco dining table base topped in glass is mirrored in Toro side chairs in white leather. They hung the show-stopping Paramount pendant in polished chrome with thousands of beveled-glass crystals from above. Pam brought in charcoal-grey leather Toro adjustable bar stools to flank the adjacent kitchen island and cocktail bar. “We didn’t know how to put colors together, on the walls, and what furnishings needed to be in certain areas—Pam had great input,” Mark says.

Those hints of bold red came through with a custom hand-blown glass sculpture on the dining room table, The Couple, a red-painted metal sculpture adjacent to the entry’s winding staircase, and custom cocktail and side tables in the living room. Pam designed the textural artwork on the entryway wall—faux finished by an expert who emulated her dissipating smoke pattern—which sparkles in daylight. They also commissioned long-time Cantoni collaborator, artist Doug Frates to create hand-blown glass sculptures which hang in the hallway gallery overlooking the foyer.

For the ultimate master bedroom escape upstairs, the room was bathed in two-tone grays. The Swarovski-crystal adorned Krustallos king bed was flanked with two Red Carpet nightstands handcrafted in Italy and finished in rich black pearl high gloss lacquer. Pam topped the opulent nightstands by Malerba with Lucite Alice table lamps to complete the look. By the windows, large smoked hand-blown glass vases and upholstered chairs created a cozy reading nook with ample natural light.

Outdoors, Pam paired Maui chairs with the whimsical Bubble armchair by Kartell under the gazebo. For the terrace overlooking the pool, she selected the Maxime sofa and Maxime lounge chairs to create a comfortable and inviting space to relax and unwind. “The home is serene, but yet it has a subtle drama to it,” Pam says. “I’ve never been able to truly materialize that vibe in another house. It just has a wonderful feel when you walk in the house and as your eye moves through the space. It’s the sort of home someone could easily walk up to and say, ‘I want to buy this house.’”

Mark agrees. “It feels like a resort,” he says. “We got the exact feel we were looking for—very high-end, very contemporary. We felt so comfortable working with Pam—the entire process was incredible, and she provided everything we needed.”
