Pantone has announced its 2020 Color of the Year: Classic Blue. A refreshing take on the tried and true blue that we all know and love, Pantone has come almost full circle for their 20th anniversary of the Color of the Year, with their first-ever color being Cerulean in 2000.
Reminiscent of the sky at dusk, Classic Blue offers reassurance, confidence and connection going into the new decade and has the ability to transform a room with its vibrant hue. Incorporating this unique color into your palette may sound daunting, but we’re here to guide you in your journey to becoming “classically blue”.
Below are 5 different ways you can incorporate the Color of the Year into your home.
1. Start Off Small

One of the many things we love about color is that you don’t have to use a lot of it to make an impact. Take for example the blue Feliz Swivel Chair in an otherwise neutral living room. These two chairs add just enough pop of color for depth and interest and they make the overall space more inviting. Having one piece in a space that stands out from the rest of the color palette ultimately creates visual interest and is typically the first thing seen upon entering the room.
2. Accessories

Making a bold statement can easily be done in a small way with decorative objects, which can serve as both accent and statement pieces around your home. Decorative objects are a good way to make your space feel fuller and more unique, as they typically represent the owner’s style. Sometimes a strategically placed vase or bowl, like the Alistair Bowl in a vibrant Oxford blue, might be the perfect piece to take your space to the next level.
3. Rugs

Displaying a vibrant color like Classic Blue in your home may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but rugs are the perfect way to add a splash of color to any space without demanding too much attention. Area rugs create balance and depth within your space – if your space is made up of more bold colors, try a muted blue or patterned rug to break up the vibrancy. If a more neutral look is your thing, try a bolder blue for an exciting pop of color. Take for example the Viera Area Rug pictured above. This area rug not only brings out the neutral color palette of the space, but in conjunction with the floor to ceiling windows, it also makes the room appear a lot larger than it actually is.
4. Analogous Colors

Color is very subjective and therefore interpreted differently by everyone, but when it comes to pairing them together in a space, there are some that generally work better with cool colors like blue, than others. Getting to know the color wheel can be very important when deciding how you can incorporate Classic Blue into your home. Analogous colors are the colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel, making them naturally harmonious together. Other cool colors, such as violet and green, tend to blend well with shades of blue because they are secondary colors to blue’s primary color. Bloquer I by Kelly O’Neal is a perfect example of this as it combines various shades of blue with a pop of green to create a piece that is reminiscent of nature.
5. Complementary Colors
Alternately, complementary colors are those that sit opposite each other on the color wheel with the most common color combinations including a primary color and a secondary color. For blue, various shades of orange look best. Complementary colors can sometimes look jarring, so choosing one color to be the main focus while the other serves as an accent color may be best. Another option is having one color be more vibrant, while the other is more subdued. In this refreshing renovation, the Cantoni Houston team opted for both options, with the orange backsplash being the vibrant, main focus and the blue countertop being the more subtle accent color.
When it comes to decorating with this refreshingly bold color, the possibilities are almost endless.
